Saturniid Moths of Greater Chennai - Data collection
Have you seen these moths?
Moths are important pollinators and despite living in the shadows of butterflies, their role in the environment is extremely important. Saturniid moths or moths belonging to the family Saturniidae are large and are often mistaken for butterflies. This project aims to collect data on the distribution on 3 Saturniid moths- the Indian Moon Moth, Tussar Silk Moth and Sri Lankan Atlas Moth-in Greater Chennai (these 3 moths are pictured below). They have multiple host plants, of which the Arjuna tree (Tamil: Marudha maram) is important.
